Traditionally women had been associated with folk art from the very beginning of the social life which was later known folk art everywhere in the world but in contemporary art in the latter half of 20th century women painters started making their presence felt in Indian art field and created their different images than of the Batik, Bandhni, Warli art and Gond paintings, and many others have acquired an independent name for themselves.
Dr.Vimmie Manoj’s engagement with contemporary art of India reflects the idea of the ‘New Woman’ emerges strongly. Within her circles, Vimmie’s New Woman, sharing both her style and her imagination, and her background made her acutely aware of how this figure was a creation and a change in her method, putting existing images together in a way in many of her paintings, which allow viewers to find meanings in their juxtaposition. Her interests in the New Woman and ethnography remain constant, but overt visual messages are resisted – unsurprisingly, given the conditions first borrowed elements of in her ‘Fantastic Art’ which explored the relationship between the world of ideas and the real world commenting on her times with all the scale and force.
Her women looking outside of her home with one wide open eye or the mother with her two girls walking in the cold world in the background of snow mountain tells one million tales of present status of women in Indian society. But optimism on many of her canvass has been symbolized with red reflections on melancholic colors. Her paintings are artistic and meaningful expression of different shades of sub duded personality of Indian women.
